Expect a full-day adult fare in the premium bracket once you add a guided snorkel. Take the morning departure for the calmest water and the best light, book ahead in the dry season, and you are back in Cairns by late afternoon with time for a shower.
If you would rather a shorter, gentler day, Green Island is the calmer alternative: a 45-minute crossing to a coral cay where you snorkel straight off the sand, wander the shaded rainforest boardwalks and take a long lunch at the resort, back in Cairns by mid-afternoon. Whichever you pick, book the couples extras, a guided snorkel or a private sun lounge, ahead of time, because they sell out through the dry season.
Saturday night: where to eat and drink for two?
Keep Saturday night on the water. Start with dinner at Dundee's on the Cairns waterfront, a reliable local table for barramundi, reef fish and mud crab with a view over the inlet, mid-range and worth booking for a prime-time table.
After dinner, wander along to Hemingway's Brewery at the Cruise Liner Terminal on the Wharf, a working brewery with tank-fresh beer, a breezy deck and live music on weekend nights, easygoing and open late. If you would rather a nightcap closer to bed, the northern end of the Esplanade near Coral Towers is calm and quiet, an easy stroll back under the palms. Guests keep mentioning how walkable the whole marina and Wharf strip is, which means neither of you has to be the designated driver.
Sunday morning: how do you spend a slow last morning?
Slowly, and on foot. Sleep in, then walk the boardwalk from our front door toward the city and pick a cafe on the Esplanade for a long breakfast, no schedule attached.
