Cairns Festival 2026 runs from Friday 28 August to Sunday 6 September, and 2026 is a big one because it doubles as the celebration of Cairns' 150th anniversary. The great majority of events are free, spread across the Esplanade, the city centre, Munro Martin Parklands and the Botanic Gardens.
You only need tickets for a handful of headline shows, chiefly the evening concerts at Munro Martin Parklands, which regularly sell out well before the gates open. If a paid show is on your list, book it through the Cairns Regional Council festival programme as soon as it goes live rather than leaving it to the week of. Everything else you can simply turn up to.
How do you get to the festival from Coral Towers?
On foot for the big-ticket free events, which is the whole advantage of staying where we are. The Grand Parade and the fireworks run along the Esplanade, and our boardwalk connects to that stretch directly, a flat and shaded 20 to 25 minute walk south from the front door. Leave the car in our free undercover parking and walk down, because the parade brings road closures and the city car parks fill hours ahead.
For the events further out, Carnival on Collins around the Botanic Gardens and Tanks precinct is about a ten-minute drive or rideshare inland to Edge Hill, and Munro Martin Parklands is a short drive or a 20-minute walk into the city. Guests keep mentioning how much easier the evenings are when they can stroll home along the water instead of queuing to leave a car park.
What are the highlights of Cairns Festival 2026?
Three things anchor the ten days. The Grand Parade and Fireworks Spectacular traditionally open the festival on the first Saturday, with the parade taking over the Esplanade from around 5.30pm and the fireworks firing over the water at about 7.30pm, and for the 150th anniversary the parade returns with a reworked, tropical look. Carnival on Collins is the festival's street-party heart, a free evening of food, music and lights woven through the Tanks Arts Centre promenade, the Botanic Gardens and the Community Gardens on Greenslopes Street.
Munro Martin Parklands hosts the marquee concerts, with world-class music including the Soweto Gospel Choir among the headline acts. Around those sit dozens of smaller free shows, comedy nights, art trails and family performances. Pick one big event and two or three small ones and you have the festival without the burnout.
Where should you eat around the festival?
Festival nights run on food trucks, but the permanent options nearby are better for a proper sit-down. Down at the Marlin Marina, a short walk from the parade route, Salt House does waterfront plates and cocktails and takes the pressure off finding a table mid-crowd if you book. A few doors along, Dundee's is the reliable local pick for barramundi and reef fish with a view over the inlet.
For a cheaper festival day, stock a picnic from Rusty's Markets on Grafton Street, open Friday and Saturday 5am to 6pm and Sunday until 3pm, and eat on the Esplanade lawns before the parade. Book any waterfront restaurant ahead on parade night, because they fill fast once the crowds arrive.
Should you book your Cairns stay early for the festival?
Yes, and earlier than you think. Late August into early September is the peak of the dry season, the best weather Cairns gets all year, with warm still days and cool nights, and the festival lands right in the middle of it. That combination fills the city, and accommodation within walking distance of the Esplanade goes first.
