Cairns for Free: The Lagoon, Botanic Gardens, and Boardwalk
Cairns packs a surprising amount into a small radius, and a lot of it costs nothing. From Coral Towers Holiday Suites, six genuinely free things to do in Cairns sit within a short walk or a ten-minute drive: the Esplanade Lagoon, the boardwalk and Muddy's Playground, the Botanic Gardens, the Art Gallery, Rusty's Markets and a mangrove boardwalk. Here is how to string them into a no-cost day.
How much does the Esplanade Lagoon cost to swim in?
Nothing at all. The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon is a free public saltwater pool, patrolled by lifeguards through opening hours, and it is the single best free thing in the city. From our front door it is about a 20 to 25 minute walk south along the boardwalk, roughly two kilometres on a flat, shaded path, so leave the car in our undercover parking and stroll down.
The Lagoon opens from 6am most mornings, with a later noon start on Wednesdays while it is cleaned, and it stays stinger-safe year round because it is chlorinated rather than open sea. Best time is early, before the tour buses, when the water is glassy and the lawns are empty. Toilets, showers, shaded grass and free electric barbecues sit right around the edge, so a swim easily turns into a morning.
What can you do along the Esplanade boardwalk for nothing?
The boardwalk itself is the free attraction, and it starts across the road from us. The 2.5 kilometre path runs the length of the foreshore, past outdoor fitness stations, shaded picnic shelters and lookouts over the mudflats where migratory birds feed at low tide. Halfway along sits Muddy's Playground, a free water-play and adventure area that also has covered tables and clean toilets, handy if you have children in tow or need a shady rest.
Guests keep mentioning how easy it is to fill an evening simply walking the boardwalk as the heat drops. Time it for dawn or dusk, when the light is soft and the temperature is kind, and you can loop from Coral Towers to the Lagoon and back without spending a cent.
Is Cairns Botanic Gardens free to visit?
Yes, entry is free every day. The Cairns Botanic Gardens sit on Collins Avenue in Edge Hill, about a ten-minute drive or short bus ride from Coral Towers, heading inland from the northern Esplanade. The main Flecker Garden and the conservatory are open 7.30am to 5.30pm, while the rainforest boardwalk, Centenary Lakes and the Zhanjiang Friendship Garden stay open at all hours.
The gardens hold one of the best collections of tropical plants in the country, and the shaded rainforest boardwalk is a cool escape on a hot day. If you go on a weekday, the Friends of the Botanic Gardens run a free guided walk of Flecker Garden at 10am, Monday to Friday, which is the easiest way to learn what you are looking at. Mornings are quietest and the birdlife is most active then.
Can you visit Cairns Art Gallery for free?
You can. The Cairns Art Gallery sits in a heritage building at 40 Abbott Street in the city centre, about a 20 to 25 minute walk or a six-minute drive from us, and general entry is free with a donation welcome at the door. It opens Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 2pm.
The gallery focuses on work from Far North Queensland and the Torres Strait, so the exhibitions feel genuinely of this place rather than a touring set you could see anywhere. It is air-conditioned, which makes it a smart middle-of-the-day stop when the sun is at its hottest, and the ground-floor shop and cafe are worth a look even if you only browse.
Is Rusty's Markets free to walk through?
Walking through costs nothing, and the samples are free too. Rusty's Markets at 89 Grafton Street is the city's produce market, running Friday and Saturday 5am to 6pm and Sunday 5am to 3pm, about a 25-minute walk from Coral Towers. Stallholders hand out slices of mango, mangosteen, rambutan and whatever tropical fruit is in season, so you can taste your way around without buying a thing.
Guests keep mentioning the fruit they had never seen before and the strong local coffee. Go early on Sunday, before the 3pm close, for the best pick and the liveliest atmosphere. There is two hours of free parking above the centre if you would rather drive in.
Where can you see the mangroves for free near Cairns?
At the Jack Barnes Bicentennial Mangrove Boardwalk, an elevated free walkway through the wetlands beside the airport, about an eight-minute drive north-west of Coral Towers. It is open at all hours and never charges entry. Two loops of raised boardwalk carry you dry-footed over the mud and through the mangroves, with interpretive signs explaining the tangle of roots and the crabs, mudskippers and kingfishers that live in it.
Come at low tide and early in the day for the most wildlife, wear repellent because the mosquitoes are keen, and stay on the boardwalk since these are crocodile waters and swimming is never an option here. It is a genuinely different half-hour from the beach and the city, and it is completely free.

Can you walk to the Cairns Esplanade from Coral Towers?
Yes. The Esplanade boardwalk runs directly past our northern end and carries on the full length into the city. From our front door it is a flat, shaded walk of about 20 to 25 minutes south to the Lagoon and the busier city stretch, and the path is pram and wheelchair friendly the whole way.
